Often there is mention of the dearth of elephants in American zoos, and with new AZA regulations to be enforced in 2016 there will continue to be several zoos with 2 elephants sending their animals away to increase the herd size at zoos with additional space. However, establishments like Woodland Park Zoo, Point Defiance Zoo and El Paso Zoo (to name just three) have all contemplated the possibility of adding Indian Rhinos to their collection. However, are there many extra Indian Rhinos around to take the place of Asian Elephants if that trio of zoos and others decide to take that route? Will the rhinos mainly be sourced from San Diego Zoo Safari Park? That place breeds rhinos like rats.
With the recent thread about hippos in US zoos, it would be interesting to see that for African and Asian elephants. I am sure someone has that information. It would be fascinating to see which zoos have less than three elephants and what ones would be predicted to shut down their exhibits. One that comes to mind is the Buffalo Zoo. They can keep their accredidation if they complete the new polar bear exhibit, but will they be penalized for only having two elephants? I am unsure if their next inspection is in 2015 or 2016.

Do you think the Buffalo Zoo could change their tune after Arctic Edge gets built? They could be keeping the elephants for the time being for the sake of maintaining solid attendance in the meantime.Just a thought what do ya think?
Yeah, I think they are focusing on one project at a time. They're probably putting that dilemma on the back burner for now. It's funny how the elephant exhibit is smack dabbed in the middle of the new entrance and new polar bear exhibit. More space could have been used if they got rid of their elephants...
