That is so interesting! I never knew that ostriches like water. This is the first time that I've seen an ostrich exhibit with enough water for them to swim in. Do these ostriches swim on a regular basis or was this the first time?

This picture was taken a year or two ago. I think I have seen the ostrich in the water twice. There are 2 ponds in this savanna exhibit that contains ostrich, wildebeest, zebra, marabou stork, and griffon vulture. I have only ever seen the ostrich and wildebeest in the water.

That's not a sight you see too often!

Were they actually swimming, or just bathing?

no, they were swimming. The one just stayed on the edge but the one in deeper water went pretty much to the center of the pond (which is fairly large for an exhibit) and then around to the side it a little ways. The ostrich never crossed the pond, not sure how deep it is so I don't know if it was swimming or walking but by the looks of it I'd say its fairly deep. It was definitely moving around alot though.

I've seen ostriches doing this in their moat at Orana Park (NZ). It is a bit weird to see. The joke was that they thought they were ducks.

I must admit that I also never have seen ostriches swim and I´ve taken care for them about 6 years in 2 different collection. There it was however not possible for them to swim but also in the many other collections where I saw them I never saw - or never heared about - swimming ostriches ! Thanks for this remarkeble photo !

The female ostriches at the Dallas Zoo swim occasionally. I saw them do it when it was pretty hot, it was fun to watch.
