There is a nice amount of shade and steep terrain, but it would have been so easy to give the apes more climbing oppurtunities.

Check out Singapore or Woodland Park for orang exhibits with full-grown trees for climbing, or even Melbourne Zoo and its famous sway-poles. Fort Worth has an exhibit for arboreal apes that features one wooden climbing structure, but 80% of the enclosure is simply terraced chunks of earth.

I would say they are the three best orang-utan exhibits and in that order. I like singapores because the orang-utans are using their natural hatitat and are mostly restricted to the tree tops where they should be.

I'm not sure, but to me it looks like if this exhibit had more climbing frames then the Orangs would be able to access the top of the rock work and presumably escape

He was being sarcastic I think :p
I think this is a situation where a cage would be far more beneficial to the apes, despite "ugly" mesh and all.

haha ahhh hence the smiley thing... doh. coming to think of it, when ive been to chester their orangs are mostly on the floor in the outdoor enclosure. thats just from personal experience for the 3 or 4 times ive been there in the past year or two.
