Red Deer

This red deer looks a little "wapiti"ish. Do you think maybe he's a hybrid, or have I just not seen enough red deer. ;)

Don't know really. I know at one time the Red Deer and the Wapiti or Elk were considered subspecies of the same species. Fossil Rim doesn't list their Red Deer on ISIS (also their Blackbuck - too many to list).

Fossil Rim's website lists them as European Red Deer. Though they do look a little like Bactrian Deer or Altai Wapiti...

I believe 2004 was the year that this was found out, Red deer (Cervus elaphus) and Wapiti (Cervus canadiensis) being diffrent species

Ituri, i was thinking the same exact thing about that looking like a wapiti, according to Fossil Rim Wildlife Centers website they have 4 species of Non- native deer and those are Axis deer (Axis axis), European red deer (Cervus elaphus), Fallow deer (Dama dama), and Sika deer (Cervus nippon). If that is a hybrid by any chance, What i am wondering is did Fossil Rim ever have Wapiti at one time ?

Without being able to put my finger on it, this doesn't look 'right' for a pure bred Red Deer.
