Have you started uploading pictures again? Nice news :)

Well, I missed the kind of discussions that uploading photos often can lead to. And it seems that @Sim has ensured that a purge such as the last one won't happen again (if people stop uploading ****** photos). Also Planckendael had shockingly little photos in the gallery compared to how interesting a zoo it is.

But whether I will continue all depends on what kind of feedback I get :)

The photos in the gallery and the discussions around them is the major reason I visit zoochat, so my thanks to everyone who uploads pictures.

Is Planckendael a larger zoo than the Antwerp Zoo? Is this like London Zoo and Whipsnade or San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Safari Park where there is an urban zoo and a larger facility in a rural area? I have tried looking at their websites but find them very difficult to navigate and read as there is no English version and even the Google translate doesn't help much.

That is indeed what it is like. Antwerp Zoo is a very traditional city zoo and probably the most centrally placed zoo in the world (it is actually built along the side of Antwerpen Centraal Station). It was founded in 1843 and is one of the oldest in the world. Antwerp Zoo is only 11,5 hectares in size so Planckendael's 40 hectares was a welcome addition to the KMDA (the Antwerp version of ZSL) when it opened in 1956. Both zoos are run in close cooperation and is in WAZA and EEP listed as one institution. Most of Planckendaels older enclosures are primarily based on hoofstock paddocks.
To compare Antwerpen Zoo keeps around 588 species whilst Planckendael only keeps 188 species.
