Elephant Skeleton - 2009

Not to beat a dead elephant, but does anybody know why the Franklin Park Zoo has an elephant skeleton in the middle of their grounds:confused:

this made me curious (as always) and I did some googling. I found only a few references to the skeleton and a youtube video, but nothing that actually explained it. I couldn't even find anything that showed a sign next to the skeleton!

I took a photo of the elephant skeleton as well as the accompanying sign, and the sign reads:

"Ranger's Note: Found a skeleton of an elephant. Her tusks are missing which leads me to think she may have been killed by poachers. Tusks are made of ivory and can be sold for a high price. Elephants have very strong family bonds and this female will be missed."

There is a similar message next to a wildebeest skeleton.

Thanks snowleopard for the information and clearing up the mystery about what this elephant skeleton is doing at the zoo.
