And I can remember when the number of zoos exhibiting this species could be counted on one hand. Their numbers now seem to be flourishing in many institutions throughout the world.

@Blackduiker: It's interesting that you say that because I was just thinking that Arabian oryx are really disappearing from zoos! There used to be herds in Sacramento, Los Angeles, and London that are now gone. I'm not sure if San Diego still has any, as they have disappeared from public view at the Wild Animal Park. I hope that there is still a large zoo population worldwide that is stable...we seem to be losing them here in California.

This looks like a nice exhibit for them. I think that Phoenix Zoo still has a large herd too, at least they did as of 2010.

^david, as you may be aware, over the past 20 years london has began cutting down its collecting. I'm not sure when the arabian oryx went (early this decade I think) and they have been send to Londons sister and a lot larger institution Whipsnade, where I believe they are doing just fine!:). I would personally love too see arabian oryx return to london, however there is no paddock for them to go into, as there old enclosure is currently occupied by african wild dogs. Hope this helps!:)

Thanks for the info Cat-man. They are probably happy at Whipsnade with more room to roam.

The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park both have Arabian Oryx right now. The Phoenix Zoo continues to and hopefully always will have Arabian Oryx.

Where are they at the SD Zoo? I will make a point of looking for them next time I am there. Can you see them from any point at the Safari Park?

At the zoo they are in the hoofstock exhibits on "Polar Rim". They are in the last one before the large one with lesser kudu and gerenuk. This one recently held addra gazelle which have moved to the end where the Chacoan peccaries were which have moved next to the warthogs.

The Safari Park oryx are supposedly in one of the old hillside exhibits that held the wild asses. This area is not visible with regular admission.

David, it actually wasn't due to lack of space, and they were kept during the period were they cut down on the species. They were moved to whipsnade due to the fact that they were re-developing there enclosure for wild dogs as part of an african theme.
