Planckendael - Peccary exhibit

The exhibit for southern white-lipped peccaries (Tayassu pecari pecari) in Planckendael. One of the best exhibits I have ever seen for this species with dirt, grass and even trees. This is one of the older exhibits in the park and will in the future be part of the American Area.

Planckendael, July 2011.

This exibit looks really great, although there are pigs in it... Normally an exibit for peccaries or other pigs looks more like the earth after a nuclear war...

I am really sorry, that white-lipped peccaries are such a rare species in european zoos (in Germany there should be only the large group in Berlin Zoo and some in Dresden)

Yes, I also noticed this. I think that the reason here might be that the ground in the exhibit is quite rocky which might mean that the peccaries can't dig it all up so easily. Also, I didn't see evidence of a large group living here (I only saw the three in the photo).
