The bridge to the central island in the South American rainforest theme in the America Area in Planckendael. The island is a large walkthrough exhibit with prime conditions for golden-headed lion tamarins (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) and geoffroy's marmosets (Callithrix geoffroyi) that inhabit it, filled with live trees and plants.
The golden-headed lion tamarin is one of the flagship species of the KMDA who also manages the EEP programme.

Hi Toddy,

I appreciate the pic, is this bridge a good representation of all the bridges at Planckendael. I am assuming it is electrified at some point to deter the primates using it?

When l was in Belgium a few years back l had no idea about this zoo and totally missed it :[. I will be sure to see it next time!

Well, that would be quite accurate to say as this bridge, and the identical one leading off the island, are the only bridges in the park designed to keep animals in. The tamarin island is the only walk-through exhibit in the park featuring free-ranging mammals. The other walk-through exhibits are the European Aviary, African Aviary and the Tropical House (pictures will of course follow).

And yes, the bridge would have previously been electrified until the monkeys learned their lesson.

That is certainly a shame. I can see that Planckendael somehow often slides below the radar of many which is a great pity. It is one of my personal favourite zoos (see the posts here). The reason that Planckendael is so unfairly forgotten is also why I decided to upload here on ZooChat again.
