Gibbon Conservation Center

Our tour guide Chris. She refers to this facility as "a brothel for gibbons." The center currently houses 5 species (42 individuals) of gibbons: Hoolock, Javan, Northern White-cheeked, Pileated, and Siamang.

The Gibbon Conservation Center is located in Santa Clarita, California; approximately 4 1/2 miles from my front door. The few miles drive over gets quite rural within minutes. You will be on the edge of Angeles National Forest.

What was your overall impression of the Gibbon Conservation Center, Blackduiker? Would you say that it is worth visiting? The conditions are obviously basic, but it seems like they have noble goals and that the animals are probably well cared for.

Basic breeding facilities, but very dedicated in what they specialize in. Not a part of any zoo reciprocal program, so you'll be paying $10.00 for about a 1-1 1/2 hour visit per adult. Children and seniors pay $5.00. And that's if you take the guided tour which takes about 45 minutes. But how many places can you see 5 species of gibbons; 42 individuals total? I plan to visit again. They plan to replace some of the exhibits in the near future. Here is the link to their website:

Correction. They are a part of a reciprocal program, just not with Los Angeles.
