African Bull Elephant Macho

He came to Brownsville in 1971 and died a few years ago. He was one of the most impressive bulls i\'ve evers een and I nevers aw an african bull with such big tusks.

He fathered four calfs, two could be raised, his first calf, a male, was born in 1979 and died in 1994 at Riddles Elephant Farm. His last calf was his Daughter Asali, she was born in 1985 and is still at the Gladys Porter Zoo.

Gladys Porter Zoo no longer has elephants. I believe that the old elephant exhibit now houses Dromedaries.

Their last elephant, a female African named Ruth was transferred to the Milwaukee County Zoo. Asali was transferred several years ago to the Memphis Zoo and is now pregnant via AI.

O really, I didn't know that. But its better for them, the exhibit was to small for the elephants.

Which us zoos are breeeding elephants by its natural way ? Not very much, I guess...
I don't like AI, its to stressful for the animals.

SDWAP, Pittsburgh, and Oregon are correct. Lowry Park has yet to produce a calf conceived naturally, but they are trying. And DAK hasnt naturally bred elephants since Jackson left...too dangerous for keepers I believe is the reason.

Other successful natural breeding programs: Montgomery, Ringling CEC, Syracuse, Columbus, Houston, St Louis, Albuquerque, Riddle's, and Carson & Barnes Circus

Attempting natural breeding: North Carolina, Jacksonville, Cincinnati, Baltimore.

Could you explain this statement further? I don't follow.

Jackson, a bull African Elephant, was on loan to DAK from the Pittsburgh Zoo. He was the last bull DAK bred naturally to their cows, since then they have used AI to impregnante the females. As for the too dangerous for keepers, DAK has a stricter protective contact policy then at other zoos, it cuts down on accident reports and deaths...not good for PR. Even their Okapi males are protected contact, because a keeper was injured once. This is unheard of (protected contact for okapi) at other zoos.

Sorry, Tamani's sire is Bulwagi who is now at DAK, previously in Loxahatchee. I believe Ellie, the dam, was AI'd even before the Swazi imports arrived. But I do remember that one of the Swazi elephants for Lowry Park was supposed to be pregnant during the transfer like SDWAP's Ndula.
