Planckendael - Oceania (Wombat)

The two connected exhibits for common wombats (Vombatus ursinus hirsutus) in the Oceania Area in Planckendael. A very nice little exhibit that really allows the wombats to go on a digging spree. Planckendael is one of only 4 European zoos to keep wombats. A bit of luck is required to see the wombats active here, and as you can see I had it. The house next to the exhibit holds the indoor housing for the wombats and echidnas.

The Oceania theme in Planckendael opened in 1998 and is one of the most extensive in Europe featuring wildlife from Australia and New Guinea.

Planckendael, July 2011.
