The wombat/echidna house featuring common wombats (Vombatus ursinus hirsutus) and Southeastern Australian short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus aculeatus), the two greatest rarities and absolute highlights in the Oceania Area in Planckendael (and indeed the whole zoo). The echidna exhibit is to the right, the wombat exhibit to the left. Planckendael is one of only 4 European zoos to keep wombats and one of only 6 that keep short-beaked echidnas (but the only ones who keep this subspecies).
The Oceania theme in Planckendael opened in 1998 and is one of the most extensive in Europe featuring wildlife from Australia and New Guinea.
