The Colchesteronian quality of the zoo's exhibitry has been referred to elsewhere; here it is striking again, with that not wholly attractive fake rock. In a way, it is almost quite comforting to see that even great American zoos, with, I would guess, far greater budgets than that of more homespun UK collections, ca do this sort of thing.

Much of this zoo was built all at once in the early 1970s. Not much has changed, from the looks of things. Marvelous collection, a couple of decent exhibits, and an abundance of really crude rockwork.

You are absolutely right, and I shelled out $30 on the fascinating history book from the zoo's gift shop on my visit in August that details the progression of the zoo. I also have a slimmer guide book from 2002, and it appears that the vast majority of the enclosures have remained somewhat stagnant for the past three decades. Much like the Milwaukee County Zoo, Gladys Porter has not altered the landscape in terms of exhibitry for many years, although with the beautiful resacas (narrow waterways) that surround most of the enclosures there is a charm to the grounds.
There have been several new exhibits scattered near the entrance, but for the most part the zoo has remained as it was first molded in the 1970's. Many of the hoofstock exhibits are still quite nice (and far superior to any of the rock quarries at the San Antonio Zoo), and the ape islands are also of decent quality, but Gladys Porter for better or worse lacks a certain "freshness" that other zoos have. But the collection of rarities makes it a must-see for any major fan of zoological parks!
