West African Bushbuck

Looks like someone made a return visit to Brownsville. :)

I plan on making a return visit myself soon (already have flight booked to San Antonio). May also try Laguna Atascosa at dawn for a longshot at sighting wild ocelot.

I went to Laguna Atascosa. There are Ocelot signs all over, but no one ever sees them except the trackers/researchers. I take that back, the lady I ended up birding with claims to have seen one lounging near the visitor center. But even the people who live and work there have never seen one except in traps.

What is the current thinking on the taxonomy of this species?

Bushbuck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Until comparatively recently I’d always known the bushbuck (harnessed antelope) as a single species Tragalephus scriptus.

That Wikipedia link splits bushbuck into two species; Colin Groves, though, recognises eight distinct species.
