European elk

Are there still MOOSE (not Elk, that's the Wapiti = Cervus canadensis) at Planckendael, because zootierliste list them as "former kept"?

@zoofanbelgium: Thank you very much for your quick response.

Do you know why Planckendael has stopped keeping/phased out this species? And where they send the remaining specimens?

European Alces alces are the original Elk (hence "European Elk"). In fact the name Elk derives from the same root as Alces. The name was taken to the Americas by the settlers and transferred to the North American version of the European Red Deer. So it is quite correct to refer to European Alces alces as Elk.

Although I do prefer Moose myself.

@Chlidonias: Thank you for the evidence. Very interesting. Didn't knew that.

Still: How consider the English speaking people Cervus canadensis if not Elk...- American Red Deer;)?

Americans use Moose for Alces and Elk for Cervus canadensis. Europeans generally use Wapiti for Cervus canadensis.

(The name Wapiti itself is derived from an American Indian word; Moose is also from an American Indian name).

And I use Moose and Wapiti and avoid the word elk for being a) unnecessarily confusing when there are two perfectly good and specific words available that carry no possibility of confusion and b) too likely to lead us to having this conversation again. :p

that's exactly what I do!!

Also, in addition to all the above I think that in North America the name Wapiti might refer to only one population or subspecies or Cervus canadensis, not the whole population of the continent.
