Does the Honolulu Zoo keep any native birds apart from the nene and io?

The Hawaiian Owl, and that's all. I was rather disappointed they didn't have any of the endemics, they've got plenty of aviaries. Better to show the rarities than common things like bulbuls and sun conures.

I would assume that avian malaria would still be a problem with housing the endemics in the lowlands? (Can birds be innoculated against avian malaria?)

That does make sense. Perhaps the temperatures on the coast also factor in.

They do have a few pairs of Amakihi off exhibit ,however the cages are covered with bug netting to keep out mosquitos.

The emdemics would make poor display birds ,they need a fine netting to keep out bugs ,which impedes viewing ,a very well planted exhibit ,and they are very shy ,flighty birds.
