This doesn't look anythink like what I was expecting from adesign I saw in one of my books, I suppose a lack of funds prevented the new look.

There was to be hippos in the water area, and underwater viewing from below the elephants.

What book did you see the design in? Indianapolis Zoo is a fantastic zoo to see young elephants as there have been a number of youngsters born there in the past decade. Also, this photo only shows a small section of the 2+ acre exhibit.

Zoo Design: The Reality of wild Illusions Kenneth J. Polakowski, The University of Michigan school of Natural resouirces ISBN 0-944150-00-4 Page 61 I enclose a poor scan of the original idea. it may well just be that an idea.

for some reason it won't attach the scanned jpeg i will have to try again

Does anybody know what happens with the Indianapolis Zoo's tropical megafauna exhibits (elephants, rhinos, giraffes, antelope, cheetahs, lions, etc.) during the winter?

Do they have houses with indoor viewing for some or all of these species, or are these species just not on exhibit during times when they can't be outside due to weather?
