I talked to a zoo horticulturist and he said the zoo is zone 9. The only plants they dig up and put in a greenhouse for the winter are the plumerias. Everything else fairs the winters well. He told me that the pathways radiate heat for the plants and also around Range of the Jaguar the pathways combined with the heated pools for the Jaguars make it possible for lots of tropical plants to thrive.
