...or maybe the bongos that might have considered the pelicans "toys". I highly doubt duckweed would be much of a bother to pelicans.

Me too - but I can easily see a zoo not wanting to present duckweed-encrusted pelicans to the public! Could just as easily be a bongo problem though, or any number of other things for that matter.
 
How were the Wood Storks interacting with the captive birds? (or mammals, for that matter?)

Didn't see any interaction per se, but the Goliath Heron seemed to be very definitely hanging out with the storks - there were plenty of places it could have taken itself off to if it wanted to.
