All the animals were in the thick growth towards the back of the exhibit and did not come down at all. It was impossible to tell how many were out, but it sounded like the whole group from the noise they made.

This exhibit is very highly regarded amongst those that have visited, and while I have yet to tour the Kansas City Zoo I've read that the chimpanzees have a 3 acre habitat to explore.
Off to the right there is another area where there are ropes and some artificial vines that they can climb. I'm also pretty sure that some of those trees in the back, if not most, are climbable as I could not see any that were hot-wired.
I was surprised when I saw this exhibit some years ago to see the chimps in many of the trees!
I later learned that the trees had originally been hot-wired to exclude the chimps but somehow (the hot-wire failed?) the animals got into the trees anyway...and have been allowed access ever since.
It's really something to see chimps so high up in the trees (10m or so?)
