Master Plan-Orangutans

I really doubt it will look like this.
This looks cool, but kind of hard to figure out how it is set up. It is obviously riffing on the National Zoo's O-Line, but what is the cable set-up connecting...two different islands?

Does this exhibit have a real timeline or is it conceptual at this point?

2020?..Seems a little early to be advertising it then.

My only guess is that its to satiate visitors that something is going to be done about moving the Orangs out of the dreadful "aviary" that they inhabit at the moment. :(

Zoo board embarrasment comes to mind. :o

In the US, zoos create a Master Plan and from that start fund raising campaigns to fund the new construction. These large capitol campaigns (as they're called) aim to raise 10s of millions of dollars (sometimes far more) and can take many years. So this is likely the beginning of that.
It's probably also aimed at local visitors, because the citizens have voted for a bond bill, which taxes them a minute amount to support the Zoo. To maintain that support (bonds mature and a new vote is needed for more funding support) the local citizens must keep enthused about the zoo.

So it is more zoo board action than embarrassment I would guess.

Thanks for the "heads up" Zooplantman, regarding USA Zoo funding etc on such a project.;)

But my problem with that is where that money [if achievable] goes?,KCZ seems to have a lot of objectives by 2020,whats built first?"Penguin Plaza"? etc, moving the Gorillas from a very decent enclosure [albeit with a few tweeks needed] to another?.

It seems KCZ have their fingers in a lot of pies when it comes to their "Master Plan" and unless they are "VERY,VERY" confident of funds coming in then i would concentrate on the Orangs & Tigers first before any other IMO.

The first project is penguins later this year. They actaully passed a new tax for residents of the city, so they now do have a fairly good source of funds. I'm still skeptical about the quality though.

I am excited about the changes coming to the zoo. I am glad that they are bringing animals closer to visitors. As a photographer, it is a real pain to try to shoot animals that are far away. I am pretty excited about Penguin Plaza! I can't wait for the giraffes to be up lose and personal again. Africa is way too big and it takes awhile to get back there. Yes, I walk the zoo every time I go out there and take hundreds of photos. I am a FOTZ member.
