Multi-Acre African Elephant Exhibit

July 18th, 2010.
This habitat, which opened in 1994, is actually called Okavango Elephant Sanctuary and the enclosure is 4 acres in size. It opened a year before the 95-acre addition to Kansas City Zoo (Africa) and what is intriguing about the paddock is that it is extremely long and narrow rather than the typically wide elephant exhibits found in major American zoos.

We called this exhibit the elephant jogging track as it resembles a jumbo-sized running pathway through the woods for much of its length.

@GraysonDP The viewing is a bit awkward as the exhibit is long and narrow and therefore if the elephants move then visitors have to move with them and change viewing areas. If I'm not mistaken the zoo plans to enhance this habitat as part of the long-range Master Plan.
