Coyote Exhibit

Aug. 2nd, 2015.
This is new and vastly improved. When I visited about three years ago, the two coyotes were in a pretty small cement cage.

I happened to chat with the co-director while I was walking around (I was the only visitor in the park) and she said that one possible option for the future is to build a Grey Wolf habitat on the slope directly behind this Coyote exhibit. There is enough land for a multi-acre exhibit that would be excellent for wolves but the establishment never knows what animals will arrive as they are essentially a rescue facility. All of the large animals (tigers, lions, cougars, leopards, coyotes, wolves) have terrific exhibits but the smaller creatures (3 species of macaque, lemurs, capuchins, coatis) all have rather tiny enclosures.

Yes, for the large predators they do a great job and use the existing terrain to build spacious exhibits on the cheap. (Very similar to what Out Of Africa south of them does). KOTW has come a long way. When I briefly lived in Las Vegas at the beginning of 1997, I toured their old facility there. They had set up a temporary home in the back half of the county animal pound (intended for dogs and cats). They did a good job making do but obviously it was not enough space and the founder (Jonathan Kraft) talked about looking for land to really give the animals room to roam. I believe they started purchase on another plot of land, also in NW Arizona, that did not work out for some reason. I am glad they found this location. Also glad they have the financial support to care for the animals considering how few visitors they get at this obscure location.
