Generally exhibits must be set back for safety purposes, but by having an overhanging section like this, it creates improved viewing without bringing the animal too close since it is set higher and children are less likely to reach out.

It is a very interesting design and I posted a photo of the Red Panda walking on the section that juts out over visitor heads. The animal was walking mainly on wire in between the logs and in all of my zoo travels I'm not sure that I've ever seen an exhibit quite like it.
