White-lipped Deer

A truly spectacular species. There is not too many places you can see them either.

Really? I didn't know that? Besides Lincoln Park Zoo, which zoos are they at?

This is off-topic but I noticed your home zoo is ZooBoise? Do you have 2 male Amur tigers? I think they're from Lincoln Park Zoo.

In the US there are only 8 zoos that have them according to ISIS.

As mstickmanp said, 8 US zoos, and they are either gone from, or off-exhibit at both the SD Zoo and the SD WAP.

@zoogeek Yeah, Tundra and Taiga, Amur tiger brothers born around 2000ish at the LP Zoo in Chicago.

@Ituri, Their sister, Molly, is at Lincoln Park Zoo. I think they were born sometime Nov 1998? I thought they were around 2 yrs old when they left the zoo to go to ZooBoise. I remember how huge they were! They were enormous compared to Molly.

The deer... is no longer at the zoo. This exhibit now has a pair of ostriches.

@pachyderm pro, Damn, what a shame (the general non visionary phase out of rare deer and hoofstock .... for goodness sakes' zoos are there to manage small populations effectively..... What some managers bring in is just hogwash ...!

@Kifaru Bwana If it makes you feel any better, since I commented on this photo (over eight years ago!) the zoo has brought in a small bachelor herd of Père David's deer to this area. Not quite as rare or impressive as white-lipped deer, but still very nice.
