I think it's a type of fish, but I'm not sure...

Yes it is a fish! Not as large as its common name sounds though.

guapote is a general term for a particular group of large Central American cichlids ("large" being a term relative to the size of other cichlids)

nope, that appears to be either a small stone or maybe a large snail (?). Guapote are much larger, in the region of about 30cm-plus as adults

Guapote is a large fish. The one at lpz was over 16 inches long.
