The famous, 30 year-old Penguin/Puffin House actually closed down a year ago and the birds were all shifted to different AZA facilities last winter. However, the zoo has not announced what will happen in this part of the zoo but it has promised that penguins will be brought back at some point in the future. That is not surprising as they are true superstar zoo animals.

On August 19th this building will be bulldozed into oblivion, and the Regenstein Macaque Forest complex will begin to take shape. Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) will be seen by the public in fall of 2014, and this zoo has a rich history with primates with the historic primate house still in operation and a very impressive chimpanzee/gorilla set of habitats also being commendable. The breeding success with gorillas has been phenomenal over the years.
The zoo will build a new outdoor African Penguin habitat, and a new Polar Bear habitat, over the current McCormick Bear Habitat near Regenstein African Journey, due to open in 2016.
