No barriers - just lighted enclosures and darkened visitor area. Only used to house very small birds (finches, diamond doves etc) but an interesting idea.

No - no glass, no wire, nothing except the light difference. It's noticeable that they don't risk putting anything particularly important in these aviaries - most could be restocked from a pet shop if the birds made a bolt for it - but they must work pretty well as they've been in use a long time.
 
They were using that technique when I was there back in '84.
 
Diurnal birds can't see in the dark, so won't fly into darkened areas.

And they probably aren't too keen on the public either.
