River Otters can't stay in the water too long because their fur isn't completely waterproof. They have to get out and dry off and spread the oils from their skin glands to keep their fur waterproof. So they mostly are in the water in the morning and evening if you really want to seem the active and playing. Midday they are usually lying about on land.
Yeah, I remember reading about that a long time ago. Today I was at the otter exhibit early in the morning and she was in the pool swimming. It would do a lap in the pool, then exit the water and run to the door to see if the keeper was still there. She is also a very vocal otter.
Yeah, Giant Otters are probably the most vocal of otters from what I've seen on videos. Do you have any pics of the exhibit? This is near the Tapir and Maned Wolves right?

The Giant Otter is actually in the the former Maned Wolf exhibit. The Maned Wolf will be moving to where the Baird's Tapir currently is, and the Tapir will be moved off exhibit.
There is a small pool in the back of the exhibit. The first plan was to move the otter to the tapir exhibit, but the pool there is too shallow even though it is a little bit longer compared to the wolf exhibit pool.
