I'm not sure if I'm ever going to warm up to this exhibit, as the new photos uploaded show the exact same thing that I saw when I visited the zoo in 2008. The pair of gorilla enclosures at the Los Angeles Zoo must be two of the most open gorilla exhibits in North America. Very little foliage, shade or even cover for the apes...but at least it looks better than Philadelphia's soccer field!
Well if you look at the clump of foliage and trees, directly in the center, that's where one of the bachelors was hiding. Quite shady, and listening to the two female keepers standing to my left, he apparently climbs the tree on occasion. But I'm in agreement about the need of more trees. Trees which were in the original plans for both enclosures. And those nice huge trees are still sitting in large planters between this space and the Bongo/Yellow-backed Duiker exhibit. Which by the way, was supposed to have been the third originally planned habitat space but still sits undeveloped; two family groups and one bachelor group.
