There have been Nile Lechwe exhibited here, and before that the original pair of Bongos ever displayed at the Los Angeles Zoo. But to my earliest recollection, this space initially housed the Hartmann's Mountain Zebras, which were later moved to a hillside perimeter enclosure where they bred quite successfully. As a matter of fact, the next time you're on the perimeter road, look directly across from the Red River Hogs and you'll see remnants of their former exhibit. That entire hillside, stretching all the way to the Gorals was lined with exhibits. Along with the Hartmann's were also Chamois, Siberian Ibex, Desert Bighorn Sheep, and Rocky Mountain Goats, just to name a few. The current Central Chinese Goral habitats were the former home of the Rocky Mountain Goats for many years. Also very successfully bred there. And next to them, Dall Sheep which also were former residents of the current Desert Bighorn Sheep space in the North American section.
One other note, the original space looked nothing like this. When the Zebra were on display here, the pond did not exist. You were also able to view them from the side where the wall now stands to the right. That wall went up, due to the leaping abilities of the Bongos, as a precaution.
