The Portico Group did an awesome job at designing this exhibit! Hopefully the rest of the exhibits that they designed come out this good. BTW, for the people that don't know, they also designed Pachyderm Forest, they are designing Rain Forest of the Americas, and I think they also designed the new Reptile House.
The exhibit already look's fantastic, imagine when the foliage grows even more lush and the Muntjacs and Pheasants are introduced. Not to mention the signs being put in place.
This exhibit is really outstanding. The viewing is good, amazing vertical space and once the pheasants and muntjac are added, this should be even better
what exactly is "pachyderm forest"? from memory early plans included other "pachyderms" such as hippo alongside asian elephants - posing a dilemma for a company that is attempting any kind of cultural immersion.
portico generally do a good job - i find they keep things rather natural using lots of timber and that they don't get too carried away, making sure not to allow the natural elements be dominated by the cultural ones.
they have done most of the stuff at melbourne zoo and werribee - and the consensus is they are some of the best exhibits around.

The first plans for the elephant exhibit at the LA Zoo was called Elephants of Surin which was about 2 acres in size. Next to Elephants of Surin was going to be Kiboko Cove which was a new Hippo exhibit. After several problems with the elephant activist the hippo exhibit was scrapped and the additional space was given to the elephants, which then came out Pachyderm Forest. I remember reading that Pachyderm Forest was going to include Sumatran Rhinos, but we all know that won't happen any time soon.
Yeah, the Portico Group is really good. I don't know if they've done anything for the Bronx, but I do know that they designed the Jaguar exhibit at Woodland Park Zoo. Here is the link to the Portico Group's projects: Portico Group • Zoos & Aquaria
