Komodo Dragon Exhibit

The female's domain. There are three enclosures, this one for the female, the male's, and one neutral in the center for direct sunlight, which they share on a rotating basis.

Actually, most of the time they access into all three when ever they want.

Oh, they stopped rotating them? I've only seen them together on very rare occasions, and that was for breeding purposes. I haven't seen them cross paths in over a year.

At the beginning they were not together, but once they were introduced they were allowed to be together. Right now we only have the female on exhibit, as the male was sent to the Columbus Zoo.

Is it just me or komodo dragons in captivity are way smaller than in the wild?

Don't they last very long in captivity?

As I stated, this is the female. The male wasn't in view on this visit but as you may know, males are considerably larger. The male here in L.A. is no exception, for he is quite large.

Yeah, as I mentioned earlier the male is not at the zoo anymore as he was sent to the Columbus Zoo. The zoo will be getting Columbus Zoo's male.

So how long has the male been gone? Wasn't his name Komo? And any word on when the Columbus male will be arriving? Maybe they'll be a better breeding match, although I've seen our male grow up ever since they got him from customs back in the late 90s, after being smuggled into the U.S. illegally.

I think he has been gone for at least one month, but I'm not sure. I'm also not sure about his name as I thought his name was Modo, but ColumbusZoo001 said his name was Mr. Lizard.

I believe Modo was the one we sent away several years ago. Komo and Modo were the two original males confiscated from a smuggler back in, I believe 1997. Komo was also alway's a bit larger than Modo. And I believe Komo was the one that was involved in the international incident with Sharon Stone's ex-husband being bit on the toe. Though I could have the names all mixed-up now.
