Los Angeles Zoo entrance

Undated (I'm guessing 1966, when it opened); back of postcard reads: Entrance to the newly completed multi-million dollar Los Angeles Zoo, one of the finest zoos in the world.

1966 is correct. This is how the entrance appeared for several years. Below the lettering was a Koi pond. And if any of you are familiar with the television program "Three's Company" this is the entrance and zoo used for the filming of that show's opening sequences, back in the 1970s. The current zoo entrance is actually the third redesign.

Much nicer than the current over-the-top "Hollywood" entry at LA

The initial idea for the entrance being so "over-the-top" was for it to be viewed from the 5 Golden State Freeway. But with the continued growth of the nearby Western Heritage Museum, the ever growing trees and construction, has almost completely blocked the zoo sign from the freeway's view.
