The glass extensions actually went up before the sea lions left, and I've read that it was to keep the sea lions from literally jumping out of the pool, which they had done on several occasions. As for the sea lions returning, they just recently sent the youngest female named Mona, that was born here in 1990, to the Brookfield Zoo.
