Giant Otters

How long have LA zoo had this species, are they a breeding pair?

They received the female about a year ago, and the male several months later. They'll be featured in the planned Rainforest of the Americas exhibit, which hopefully will break ground this year. It's due for completion in about 2012. And yes, they bred just months ago, unfortunately, all 3 pups were lost. I believe from a mishap with the adult male. But the zoo is optimistic about their success in the future.

This pool doesn't look very big.

This second pool isn't very big, and what you see in the photograph is about 2/3 its total size. But this is only a temporary space which now includes 2 pools. The other about 3 times larger. The Otter pair seem quite happy here, even producing 3 pups that unfortunately didn't survive, though they've been together for less than a year. Hopefully their new habitat in the Rainforest of the Americas will be completed by 2012/13.
