September 1992
I lived about a mile from the L.A. Zoo from mid 90 to early 92 and used to go a lot, so I probably saw these. I honestly don't remember, as I was just getting into animals and would not have known how rare they were.

I too wish I had known just what I was looking at when I did my earlier zoo trips. In 1995 I got to see the two Berlin zoos for instance; they have splendid collections even today but nothing compared to then or before. Besides, aged 14, I was more interested in cats, bears and large ungulates than in the smaller yet just as beautiful creatures I saw.

During my recent USA tour I knew what was rare and what was not, but I wish I had too when I visited the US on the earlier occasion, in 2003, when San Diego's Horn and Hoof Mesa was up for instance. I loved what I was seeing (not to mention being at the San Diego Zoo finally) but didn't really realise how rare some of the species were until much later.

Jentink's Duiker

Wow what a sensational photo, two of them in one picture, simply amazing!
San Diego and LA Zoo should really try to get these back!

San Diego got rid of Horn and Hoof Mesa, they aren't into rare hoofstock anymore :(

But i agree that LA should

I'm almost certain this photo was taken at the current Bongo exhibit. The other possibility, would be the now empty smaller enclosure right past the Bongos, as you walk towards the Giraffes through the bamboo forest to your left. At least the remnants of that enclosure that once housed several species of hoofstock over the years.
