Rainforest of the Americas Construction Site - October 7, 2011

Could you tell if they have started knocking down the abandoned aviaries on the hill yet (assuming that this area will be part of the new exhibit)?

They seemed to have been demolished. I notice a walkway with trashcans, but I believe that was part of the handicap ramp to one of the two aviaries still open, and not a part of the Rainforest sight.

I actually couldn't tell, but I don't believe the Griffon Vulture aviary is a part of the Rainforest site. But don't quote me on that.

Actually, according to the new map the site is part of the new Rainforest complex, which is why I ask.

So is the building in this photo all that remains of the China Pavillion? If so, where did the red uakaris go?

Very exciting to see work finally started. Too bad it will not be done in time for the AZAD convention that L.A. Zoo is hosting one year from now.

Yes, and the building will be used as a holding area. I'm not really sure about the Red Uakaris and I'm really disappointed that we might not see them ever again.

It is a shame that it won't be finished by the time of the convention, but if the complex is close to completion you guys might get a tour of it. For the annual volunteer party at the zoo we were given a tour of the elephant barn months before it even opened!

I have heard a reliable rumor from a source I cannot disclose that a public U.S. facility I cannot disclose is getting red uakaris. I had assumed they are importing them, but perhaps they are getting the L.A. group instead? (NOTE - the facility is NOT my Reid Park Zoo - it is not even in my state).

I would be surprised if they left the zoo, considering how old and delicate the trio of monkeys are, but anything could happen in the zoo world. If that zoo is indeed importing then that is exciting news, considering how amazing these monkeys are and it would be a shame if they disappear from zoos.

From photos you can't really tell how big the construction area actually is. It is so big it actually got me more excited for the whole complex!
