@Blackduiker: when you worked at the LA Zoo in the 1980s what was the elephant program like? Didn't they used to have something like 8 elephants crammed into the old exhibit at that time?

They actually had 2, originally 3 exhibit spaces back then, but compared to the space they have to roam today you could call it cramped. The barn prior to this one was rather spacious though, and wasn't the original building from 1966.
