Thanks for posting the photos. It's very interesting to see who has lived at the zoo over the years. It makes me understand why people bemoan the shrinkage of the LA Zoo's collection from what it used to be, although I personally think that focusing on fewer species in great exhibits makes a better zoo.
Having seen every phase of species represented at the zoo, I still feel we have an outstanding collection. My only complaints? The number of bird species has dwindled tremendously, and the almost total disappearance of bears. L.A. once had probably the best representation of bears on exhibit, that I've seen anywhere.
I have to agree with you. I remember reading that in the early 90's the zoo was in the top five in number of bird species. I would love to have more bears, but if the zoo can't build suitable exhibits then I won't mind not having them back.

That's correct, only if they were exhibited in new state of the art habitats. Like the proposed Grizzly and Polar Bear habitats, that were part of the 1990s master plan.
