Was the exhibit configured differently back in 1982? The pond looks larger than it is now, but it may just be the angle of the photo.
Do you remember when was the last time that they had other species mixed in with the giraffes? I remember on my first LA Zoo visit in 1988 that there were gerenuks in with the giraffes.
Actually, I don't believe the pond even existed when the zoo first opened in 1966. That came probably a good 15 years later. And the yard is basically configured about the same, except at the furthest end they had a bit more space to roam. On your next visit, look for the furthest barn door, they once had access to that far corner.
And seeing the Gerenuks in the yard with them, was probably about the last mixed experiment they've attempted. Though myself and mstickmanp, are both advocates of putting the lone ostrich in with them. As I've seen in several other zoos.
