Harpy Eagle at the Los Angeles Zoo

He is the son of the breeding pair at the San Diego Zoo. He was less than a year old in this pic and he will make his home in the new Rainforest of the Americas exhibit when it opens in 2010.

I had no idea that LA already had a harpy eagle. Where is he displayed, or is he not on exhibit?

The zoo actually has two (1.1) harpy eagles. The male is off exhibit and is sometimes brought out for visitors to see, which is how I saw him. The female, which is rather old, is on exhibit in the roundhouse across from the Hippo exhibit. I'm hoping the zoo will acquire a young female for the zoo's young male once Rain Forest of the America opens.

Thanks for the info. I will look for the female next time I am there.

As of early 2012 there is no harpy eagle on regular display. The only place to see one is in the bird show, if it happens to be part of the show at any given time. This apparently will change when the Rainforest of the Americas opens in 2013 and there is a new harpy eagle exhibit in this complex.
