Bears

Undated postcard featuring brown bears and their admirers at the Los Angeles Zoo.
Thanks for posting this! The bear grottoes were later transformed into gorilla exhibits. This is now the location of the new Campo Gorilla Reserve.

Also, the famous treetops terrace in the background will be destroyed eventually to build a new events area, carousel, and new restaurant.

this is a very interesting exhibit. Its a great photo.

Wow! I use to own this picture which was actually a souvenir postcard. This is the way the zoo looked back in 1966 when I first attended, soon after it opened. I haven't seen that postcard since I was a kid!(I'm now 54).

And I'm glad to hear the theme building in back will be torn down, it's served its purpose and never was completed due to a lack of funds. Those high twin towers no longer exist due to structural hazards from termites.

And probably shown in the photograph was the male grizzly, an extremely prolific dad for several years dating back to 1961.

Of course, I believe these are the Kodiak Browns. They exhibited both Kodiaks and Grizzlies in adjacent grottoes. Part of their numerous bear species back in the 1960s, as compared to only one species on exhibit today; American Black Bears.
