August 2, 2009 old aviaries

Remains of the old aviaries, high on a hillside, closed for MANY years. You can see why by the collapsing walkway.

What fond memories. Once home to a vast collection of bird species and the best view of the zoo. But soon to be torn down to make way for the future Rainforest of the Americas exhibit.

I heard that the LA Zoo at one point had over 250 species of birds, which were mainly exhibited in this aviaries. I wish I would have had the chance to see this structure open.

I can't wait for the day when all this is cleared up for the new Rain forest of the Americas.

I always loved that complex too--I still remember the great views and the Phillipine Monkey-eating eagle, among many other rare species. I didn't realize there were still "relics" of the walkways and aviaries existing on the hillside before the Rainforest construction began.

I first visited the LA Zoo in 1989 and these exhibits were closed even back then. Perhaps Blackduiker, Michael, and/or Arizona Docent know when exactly they closed. These exhibits were standing until mid-2011 when they were cleared away for construction of the new Rainforest of the Americas.

Thanks! I noticed them for the first time around 2010 or 2011 and was curious about what they were and how long they had been closed for.
