A portrait of an eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) inside the Ape House in ZOO Antwerpen. This is one of the two females currently living at the zoo. ZOO Antwerpen is the only zoo in the world where you can see eastern gorillas. I was actually quite shocked when I first saw these two ladies as the differences between eastern and western gorillas are more pronounced that I thought.
The Ape House was built in 1959 in typical 50es style with moated outdoor exhibits and originally housed bonobos, gorillas and orangutans. In 1986 the whole house was renovated and the moats removed to be replaced by covered outdoor exhibits.
