Disappointing Gorilla Exhibit

Basically nothing for them to climb, the heavily planted areas are hot wired, and you can even hear the electricity for some reason, first time I've noticed that anywhere.

Good views though, and it looks nice to someone who doesn't notice the hot wiring and doesn't care about the lack of climbing structures.

Ape Wild! L.A. Zoo Opens $19M Gorilla Reserve - cbs2.com

The link above claims that the exhibit cost $19 million to construct, a staggering amount for an enclosure that is so OPEN. Where is the lush rainforest atmosphere that is evident at either the Bronx Zoo or Disney's Animal Kingdom? Where is the canopy? Where are the climbing structures? Where is the lawnmower?;)

Could indeed have been so much more! Did the exhibit improve over time or is it still the same barren place that can be seen on the photo? They did the elevation very well, that's the thing I do like about the exhibit.

The exhibit has filled in with plants some, but it is in a desert climate rather than Seattle or New York so it is still not as dense as Woodland Park or the Bronx. The broken waterfall has been fixed. I agree that this exhibit is not as "spectacular" (however one would define that) as some exhibits, but it is still a good exhibit and I would dispute that it is "disappointing". It is certainly adequate and far better than what it replaced.

And the gorillas seem very content.

If I had a zoo, I would have the gorilla exhibit good, allow them to climb the trees and ropes, and stuff. I guess this exhibit at the LA Zoo is disappointing.
