The exhibit for sub-antarctic penguins inside Vriesland in ZOO Antwerpen. The species inside this exhibit are king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus), subantarctic gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua papua) and macaroni penguins (Eudyptes chrysolophus). Not a very large exhibit but the pool is much deeper than can be seen here.
The Vriesland building was opened in 1997 with an indoor exhibit for sub-antarctic penguins and outdoor exhibit for northern sea otters (Enhydra lutris lutris). The last sea otter died in 2010 and was replaced with harbor seals.
Vriesland underwent a smaller renovation in the fall of 2011 shortly after these pictures were taken, but the basic form of the exhibit is the same.
