Memphis Zoo - Hippo Pool

July 2008. Arguably the second worst hippo exhibit in North America, but in 2010 the hippos are finally receiving a brand new habitat. Perhaps only the San Francisco Zoo has a worse hippo pool.

Ive never seen such a horrible exhibit in all my life, thy can't even submerge them selves in the water. i totally agree with u!

Only one more year in their atrocious exhibit, and then the hippos will have a brand new, modern habitat in a different section of the zoo.

Nah, before the Pachyderm Building closed in Cleveland, they had a pretty bad hippo exhibit.

While the hippo house dates from the 1950's, the pool in this photo was built in 1916 and in 2016 Zambezi River Hippo Camp will open. It is a $22 million improvement in a separate section of the zoo that also includes Nile crocodiles, okapis and flamingos. Memphis Zoo has had terrific breeding success with hippos in the 100 years of this pool's existence, but in truth hippos have proven to be excellent breeders in captivity all over the world.

I notice when this thread started it said the new exhibit would open in 2010. Now we say it will open in 2016. Oh the joys of fundraising.

Snowleopard states this is the second worse exhibit in the country. I wonder if your vote for worst is Fort Worth? (Ironically Fort Worth and Memphis are both very good zoos overall).

Well, both Memphis and Fort Worth have dreadful hippo exhibits but Memphis will have a new one in 6 months and Fort Worth in a couple of years. San Francisco has a very poor hippo enclosure and Capital of Texas Zoo has one that could best be described as "home-made".
