A new West Entrance Parking Lot is supposed to open this summer, followed by a new otter exhibit and entrance plaza similar to the main entrance opening in 2016.
There were at one time silver pheasants there, and a whooping crane arrived in 2007. When a female crane arrived in 2009 or 2010, I don't know for sure, she was kept separate from the male, named Torch, while they were being introduced. The new female, named Tiki, took up residence in the silver pheasant exhibit. Around 2011, Torch and Tiki were successfully united in the larger of the two pheasantry exhibits, and the silver pheasants were back. However, by the end of 2012, the silver pheasants were gone, I have no idea where they went or why they went there and I haven't seen them since. For a while their exhibit stood empty until June 2014, when two King Vultures named Gilbert and Yeti moved into the vacant former pheasant exhibit.
I personally am pleased with this story though, because not only are king vultures on of my personal favorite birds, but they're a very interesting and unique vulture species.
So to answer the very original question from DavidBrown, yes. This is going to be the first newly constructed (not newly renovated) exhibit the zoo has added since the 1990s. Since 1998, to be exact.
